How to Tell if You Have a Heat Pump

identifying your heat pump

Not sure whether your HVAC system is a heat pump? Here are four reliable ways to find out:

  1. Check the Manufacturer’s Label

Your outdoor unit’s label offers the clearest clues. Look for the word “heat pump” printed on the nameplate, or a model number beginning with “HP.” You’ll typically find this label on the side of the unit.

Also, check the yellow EnergyGuide sticker. If it lists both SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) ratings, that’s a strong indicator you’re dealing with a heat pump. Standard AC units only list SEER ratings.

Still not sure? Snap a photo of the label and send it to an HVAC pro for confirmation.

  1. Look at the Thermostat Settings

Your thermostat can also offer key insights. If you see an option for “Emergency Heat” or “Aux Heat,” that’s a sign you’ve got a heat pump. These backup heating modes are only found on heat pump systems.

Additional heat pump-specific thermostat features may include:

  • Ability to switch between heating and cooling
  • An auto-mode that toggles between both based on temperature
  • Two-stage heating (primary + auxiliary)
  • Programming options like “wake,” “leave,” “return,” and “sleep”

Seeing several of these settings together? You likely have a heat pump.

  1. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Take a look at your system’s outdoor component. A few things to check:

  • EnergyGuide label with both SEER and HSPF ratings
  • A brass reversing valve (typically located near the top of the unit)
  • Model number starting with “HP”

Want to be sure? Put your system in heating mode and see if the outdoor unit runs. If it does—even in cold weather—you’ve got a heat pump. Air conditioners don’t operate in heating mode.

Also, review any paperwork left by the previous homeowner. Installation documents or service receipts often clarify whether you have a heat pump.

  1. Observe Seasonal Operation

Heat pumps work year-round. So if your outdoor unit runs even when it’s cold outside, that’s another clue. Unlike furnaces, which generate heat, heat pumps move heat from the outside in—even when it’s chilly.
