It usually starts with something small. You flip the switch and hear a hum — the motor is trying, but the grinding plate isn’t moving. Or there’s a noise that sounds wrong, a clunk or a scrape, and you turn it off fast. Maybe you opened the cabinet under the sink for something else and found the bottom of the disposal damp, a slow drip pooling on the shelf liner.
You’ve probably already hit the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Maybe twice. You’ve run your hand under the cabinet to check for real wetness. You’ve Googled what the hum means. And now you’re here, trying to figure out whether this is a $40 fix or a whole new unit — and whether it’s worth calling someone out or just living with it for a few days.
A few situations that bring Frederick homeowners to this point:
None of these are emergencies, but they’re all annoying in a very immediate, domestic way. The kitchen doesn’t fully work until this is handled.
I called this morning needing a plumber and we’re out the same day. Very personable and knowledgeable.

Matt was very nice and punctual. He fixed the issue in a matter of minutes and did not try to upsell the issue. Will definitely be referring and using in future.

Manufacturer dealer certifications require demonstrated installation quality, verified customer satisfaction ratings, and completed factory training. Premier and Authorized status also unlocks enhanced warranty options on new equipment — terms that aren't available through uncertified installers. The LG Pro Platinum designation is LG's highest contractor tier, covering cold-climate and inverter-driven systems specifically.
When a BPM plumber arrives, the first thing they do is tell you what they’re looking at and why — not just start pulling things apart. If the disposal is jammed, that’s usually a quick mechanical fix. If it’s leaking, they’ll trace where the water is actually coming from, because a leak at the flange, a leak at the side discharge, and a leak at the drain connection are three different problems with three different fixes. You hear what they find before anything is replaced.
The honest answer on repair versus replacement: BPM tells you what the unit actually needs. If a $40 part and twenty minutes of work gets it running reliably, that’s the recommendation. If the motor is failing on a unit that’s already ten or twelve years old and has had one repair already, they’ll say so — and explain why another fix is likely just buying a few more months. That decision is yours to make with clear information, not pressure.
When replacement is the right call, the job typically runs one to two hours from start to finish. The old unit comes out, the new one goes in, connections are checked, and the disposal is tested before the plumber leaves. BPM can advise on sizing — a household that runs the disposal hard through meal prep every night has different needs than one that uses it lightly — so you’re not paying for more unit than you need, or ending up with one that’s undersized for how your kitchen actually runs.
BPM handles both the plumbing and the wiring side of a disposal swap. Most standard replacements connect to an existing outlet under the sink and don’t require a separate electrician visit. If the wiring situation is unusual, you’ll know that before work begins. BPM’s full-service residential plumbing covers everything from the disposal connection to the drain line beyond it.

5 Stars – Outstanding Service!
I was referred to BPM Heating & Cooling and could not be more impressed! I reached out to both BPM and Ben Lewis at the same time — Ben had a two-week wait, but BPM showed up the same day in the early afternoon. Technician Matt Przywarty was prompt, professional, and clearly very knowledgeable. He quickly diagnosed and repaired a clogged drain and went above and beyond by explaining what caused the issue and how to prevent it in the future. He provided a detailed list of do’s and don’ts, which was incredibly helpful. Matt was polite, thorough, and respectful of our home. I’m extremely pleased with the service and grateful for the quick response. Thank you, BPM and Matt — highly recommend!!

Price was right, scheduling was easy, workmanship was great, and they cleaned up nice afterwards. Great to finally find my ‘go to’ plumbers.

It depends on the age of the unit and what’s actually wrong. If the disposal is under seven or eight years old and the problem is a jammed plate or a leaking sink flange connection, repair usually makes sense — the fix is quick and the unit has useful life left. If the motor is failing, the unit is ten or more years old, or it has needed more than one repair in the past couple of years, replacement is typically the smarter call. BPM will tell you which situation you’re in after looking at it, without pushing you toward a new unit if the existing one is worth fixing.
A hum with no movement almost always means the grinding plate is jammed — something is wedged in the grinding chamber and the motor is straining against it. The motor is still alive; it just can’t turn. This is one of the more fixable disposal problems. If the jam can be cleared and the motor hasn’t overheated or burned out from repeated attempts, the unit often runs normally again. Hitting the reset button repeatedly while it’s humming can stress the motor, so it’s worth having someone look at it before that becomes the bigger issue.
A service call to diagnose and repair a jammed or leaking disposal generally runs less than a full replacement. Replacement costs depend on the unit — a standard household disposal typically falls in a moderate price range, while higher-horsepower models for heavier use cost more. BPM provides the price before any work starts, so there’s no surprise when the job is done. Call (240) 200-0887 for a specific quote based on what you’re dealing with.
Yes — a slow drip under the sink is worth addressing promptly. The cabinet floor and the subfloor beneath it are typically particleboard or plywood, both of which absorb moisture and begin to swell and soften with sustained exposure. A few days of a slow leak usually isn’t catastrophic, but a week or two can mean cabinet floor damage that adds cost beyond just fixing the disposal. If you’ve found wetness under the sink, put a towel down and don’t run the disposal until it’s been looked at.
If the disposal runs normally but water drains slowly, the problem is more likely in the drain line below the disposal — either a partial clog in the P-trap or further downstream — rather than in the unit itself. If the disposal isn’t running at all, or is leaking from the body of the unit, the disposal is the starting point. When BPM comes out, the technician checks the full drain path, not just the disposal, so you get an accurate read on where the problem actually is.
A standard replacement — old unit out, new unit in, connections checked, disposal tested — typically takes one to two hours. Older homes with tighter cabinet configurations or non-standard drain connections can take a bit longer, but it’s rarely an all-day job. BPM confirms the drain is flowing correctly before leaving, so you’re not left wondering if everything is actually right.
Most garbage disposal replacements are plumber-only. Standard disposals connect to an existing outlet under the sink — the plumber handles both the plumbing connections and that final plug-in. An electrician is only needed if there’s no existing outlet under the sink and a new dedicated circuit has to be run, which is uncommon in homes that already have a working disposal. If your situation turns out to need electrical work, BPM will tell you that before starting.
