When Your Ductless System Stops Performing the Way It Should

You already know how a mini split is supposed to work. You chose it for a reason — a room the central system never reached, a basement you finished, a zone you wanted independent control over. So when something is off, you notice immediately.

Maybe the head unit is running but the room stays warm. Maybe one zone in a multi-head system has gone quiet while the others are fine. Maybe the unit is throwing an error code and you are not sure whether that means a simple reset or something that needs a technician. Or maybe performance has just gradually slipped — the unit that used to hold the room at 68 degrees now struggles at 72 — and you are trying to figure out whether that is a maintenance issue, a refrigerant issue, or a sign the system is aging toward its end.

The frustrating part is finding a contractor who actually knows ductless. Not every HVAC company does. Some treat mini splits as an installation-only specialty and refer you elsewhere for service. Others show up without the right equipment or familiarity with the error code system your unit uses. You have probably already sensed that gap — which is why you are searching specifically rather than just calling the first name that comes up.

Shawn and Mychall we’re awesome! We called two different HVAC companies to diagnose our unit not working. BPM was the only company who could figure it out. I would strongly recommend reaching out if you need anything heat, air, plumbing or electrical related.

I can’t say enough good things about BPM Heating, Cooling & Plumbing. We bought a house, and on the day we moved in there was mold in the mini-splits that another company failed to remediate. We couldn’t move in until the mold was remediated. BPM sent out a highly experienced technician the next day who took care of 7 mini-splits (big job). From the first call to the company to the technician they sent, start to finish, exceptional experience.

Why dealer status and licenses matter

Manufacturer dealer status and state licenses aren't decorations — they affect which warranty terms you get on new equipment, who's allowed to pull your permits, and whose installation work the manufacturer will stand behind.

Maryland HVAC Master License #75803  ·  Master Plumber / Gas Fitter #86156

Manufacturer dealer certifications require demonstrated installation quality, verified customer satisfaction ratings, and completed factory training. Premier and Authorized status also unlocks enhanced warranty options on new equipment — terms that aren't available through uncertified installers. The LG Pro Platinum designation is LG's highest contractor tier, covering cold-climate and inverter-driven systems specifically.

How BPM Handles Ductless Mini Split Service in Urbana

BPM services ductless systems the same way it handles every other HVAC call: the technician arrives, confirms what you are experiencing, and works through the system methodically before recommending anything. For ductless, that means checking the indoor head units, the outdoor compressor, refrigerant charge, drainage, filters, and the communication between zones — not just the component that seems to have failed.

Error codes get diagnosed on-site. BPM technicians work across the major ductless platforms — LG, Lennox, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and others — and carry the tools to interpret manufacturer fault codes and test the system properly. You will not be told to call the manufacturer.

On multi-zone systems, a single non-performing head does not mean the whole system comes apart. The technician isolates the problem zone, confirms the outdoor unit and other heads are unaffected, and addresses what actually needs attention. If the issue is something that can wait — a filter that needs cleaning, a drain line that is starting to restrict — you hear that honestly. If it is something that genuinely needs repair, you get a clear explanation of what failed and what fixing it involves before any work begins.

When a less expensive fix genuinely solves the problem, that is what BPM recommends. The goal is a system that performs the way you need it to, not the largest invoice.

BPM also handles ductless additions — adding a zone to a room that gets no airflow from the central cooling system. Whether that is straightforward depends on the existing outdoor unit’s remaining capacity, and BPM will tell you honestly what is possible before any equipment is ordered.

Installed mini-splits. They really do mean satisfaction guaranteed. I wasn’t happy at first with some of the way the outside coverings looked, and they redid everything multiple times until I was completely satisfied.

Wonderful work! Extremely professional team, very knowledgeable, and kind crew. Was provided options and educated on why certain brands have different pros and cons. Two mini splits were added to my upstairs and my world has changed! I can now sleep in my bedroom again and work in my office. So worth it!

BPM Heating & Cooling helped me to research different HVAC and water heating systems to replace my old natural gas appliances. I’m very happy with my new heat pump min-split system and tankless electric water heater. I had wanted to make these kinds of changes to utilize the electricity produced by my solar panels but had a hard time finding a vendor to help me find the right systems. Bert from BPM Heating & Cooling was willing to go the extra mile to find the right solutions for me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you actually service ductless systems, or is this mostly an installation business?

BPM services, repairs, and maintains ductless systems as a regular part of the workload — not a specialty add-on. BPM holds certifications from LG (Pro Platinum Dealer), Lennox (Premier Dealer), and Lennox Powered by Samsung Specialist, covering the major ductless platforms. Technicians carry the tools to diagnose fault codes and test system performance on-site across brands including LG, Lennox, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and others. You will not be referred to the manufacturer or told the system is out of scope.

My unit is running but not cooling the way it used to — what is usually behind that?

Reduced cooling performance on a functioning unit most often traces to refrigerant loss, a dirty or restricted evaporator coil, a clogged condensate drain affecting airflow, or a filter that has not been serviced in too long. In older units, compressor wear can also reduce capacity gradually without triggering an obvious fault. A technician can check refrigerant charge, airflow, and system pressures on-site and tell you what is actually limiting performance before recommending any repair.

One head in my multi-zone system stopped working. Can you fix just that zone?

Yes. On a multi-zone system, a single non-performing indoor head is typically an isolated issue — a failed board, a communication fault, a refrigerant imbalance to that branch — and does not require touching the other zones or the outdoor unit beyond diagnostic checks. BPM isolates the problem zone, confirms the rest of the system is unaffected, and addresses what actually failed. You get a clear explanation of the cause and the repair cost before anything is replaced.

My unit is throwing an error code. Can you diagnose that, or do I need to contact the manufacturer?

BPM diagnoses error codes on-site. Technicians work across the major ductless platforms and carry the reference and test equipment to interpret manufacturer fault codes and trace them to the actual cause — whether that is a sensor, a board, a refrigerant issue, or something else. Contacting the manufacturer is not necessary and will not get you faster service.

How often does a ductless system actually need maintenance, and what does that involve?

Once a year at minimum — twice is better, timed to the seasons. A proper maintenance visit covers the indoor head units (filters, coil, condensate drain), the outdoor compressor unit (coil cleaning, electrical checks, refrigerant pressure), and a check of the communication between zones. In Maryland’s climate, condensate drainage and coil cleanliness matter more than in drier regions — humid summers push those components hard. BPM’s Comfort Club plan includes spring and fall visits plus an annual plumber check, with 20% off any repairs needed.

I want to add a zone to a room that gets no airflow. Is that straightforward?

It depends on what the existing outdoor unit can support. Every outdoor compressor has a rated capacity, and multi-zone systems are designed to run within that limit. If the current outdoor unit has remaining headroom, adding an indoor head is often a clean addition. If it is already at or near capacity, adding a zone means either upsizing the outdoor unit or adding a separate system. BPM will assess the existing outdoor unit’s capacity and tell you honestly what is possible — and what it will cost — before any equipment is ordered.
