Heat Pump Water Heater Installation in Frederick, MD

A homeowner in Frederick, MD was ready to move away from a gas-fired water heater in their basement. The goal was a full conversion — replacing the existing unit, capping the gas and vent lines, and stepping up to a more efficient electric system that would reduce long-term operating costs.

Brian installed an LG 80-gallon heat pump water heater, a square-profile unit with inverter-driven heat pump technology and a UEF of 3.9 — a significant efficiency jump over a standard electric resistance model. The tank features enamel coating and an anode rod to resist corrosion, and it carries a 10-year warranty on both the tank and compressor. The unit connects to LG’s ThinQ Wi-Fi platform, giving the homeowner remote control over operating modes — Auto, Heat Pump, Turbo, Vacation, and Schedule — along with live temperature monitoring from a phone. A required surge protector was installed alongside the unit to protect the system from transient voltage events. Brian also installed a 4.5-gallon expansion tank and a drain pan at the time of the water heater swap, avoiding the need to drain the house for the expansion tank work. The existing gas supply and vent line were capped and decommissioned as part of the same visit. Permits were pulled for the job.

With the conversion complete, the homeowner has a high-capacity electric system that no longer depends on natural gas service. The LG unit’s 10-year tank and compressor warranty provides long-term coverage on the core equipment. The installation is Tax Credit Eligible, and the unit carries an Energy Star rating — both documented at the time of the project.

Heat Pump Water Heater Installation in Frederick, MD

A homeowner in Frederick, MD was ready to move away from a gas-fired water heater and upgrade to a high-efficiency electric system. The switch meant capping the existing gas and vent lines, so the project required a permit — pulled before work began to keep everything above board.

Matt installed a 58-gallon LG heat pump water heater with a UEF of 3.9, a significant efficiency jump over a conventional tank. The unit runs on inverter-driven heat pump technology as its primary heat source, with two backup heating elements for reliability if the heat pump component ever needs attention. A 2.1-gallon expansion tank was added to the cold-water supply line, and a drain pan was set beneath the unit at installation. Because heat pump water heaters pull moisture from the surrounding air as part of their operation, a new condensation pump with vinyl tubing was run to an existing drain location to handle that output. The existing gas supply and vent line were capped as part of the same visit. A surge protector required by LG for the installation was also connected to protect the unit from electrical transients. The LG carries a 10-year warranty covering both the tank and compressor.

With the gas line decommissioned and the new system running, the homeowner has a water heater that costs significantly less to operate than the unit it replaced. The installation is permitted and inspected, the equipment qualifies for a federal tax credit, and the 10-year tank and compressor warranty provides long-term coverage on the investment.

Bathroom Sink Drain Clog Repair in Frederick, MD

A bathroom sink in Frederick, MD had stopped draining properly — the kind of slow, standing-water problem that starts as a nuisance and quickly becomes unusable. The homeowner called BPM to clear the blockage and get the drain flowing again.

Bryan assessed the clog and cleared it using a plunger and force cup — the right tool for a blockage of this type, where mechanical force is enough to dislodge the obstruction without running a cable machine through the line. This approach handles the majority of bathroom sink clogs, which tend to accumulate near the drain opening or just past the p-trap from a buildup of hair, soap residue, and debris over time.

With the blockage cleared, the drain returned to normal flow. No cable work was needed, and the fix was straightforward. For the homeowner, that means a fully functional sink without the disruption of a more involved service call. Keeping bathroom drains clear of hair and soap buildup — or using a simple drain screen — can extend the time between cleanings considerably.

Leaking Hose Bibb Diagnostic on Plumbing in Frederick, MD

A homeowner in Frederick, MD noticed water on the basement floor and suspected it was coming from somewhere in the plumbing. With moisture showing up at floor level, pinpointing the source was the priority before any damage could spread.

Bryan traced the leak to a hose bibb shut-off with a failing packing nut — the compression fitting that seals the valve stem and prevents water from weeping past it. Over time, packing nuts can loosen or the packing material itself can deteriorate, allowing water to escape around the stem rather than through the valve. Once the source was confirmed, Bryan tightened the packing nut to reseat the seal and stop the leak at its origin.

With the repair complete, the basement floor is dry and the plumbing is functioning as it should. Catching a packing leak early is worth it — left alone, even a slow weep can cause water damage to framing, flooring, and finishes over time. A straightforward fix once the source is found.

Leaking Copper Cap Repair on Plumbing in Frederick, MD

A leaking 3/4″ copper cap on a supply line brought a Frederick, MD homeowner to the point where the repair couldn’t wait. The fitting had failed and was actively losing water, so the section needed to be cut out and rebuilt before any further damage could occur.

Matt removed the leaking cap and reconfigured the line using a 3/4″ x 1/2″ coupling, a 1/2″ street 90, a new ball valve, and roughly a foot of 1/2″ copper pipe. The repair brought the line down to 1/2″ at that termination point and added shutoff capability that wasn’t there before — a practical improvement over the original configuration. The new ball valve means the homeowner can isolate that section of the line independently if service is ever needed again.

With the repair complete, the line is dry and fully functional. The added shutoff valve is a small but meaningful upgrade — it gives the homeowner direct control over that branch without having to cut water to a larger portion of the system. A straightforward fix that addressed the immediate leak and left the line in better shape than it was before.

Garbage Disposal & Faucet Rebuild in Frederick, MD

The homeowner in Frederick, MD needed two plumbing issues handled in the same visit: a garbage disposal that had reached the end of its life and a Moen faucet in need of rebuilding. Rather than schedule separate calls, both were addressed together.

Bryan swapped out the old disposal for the homeowner’s new unit — a straightforward replacement at a standard under-sink installation with simple access on a non-farm-style sink. The homeowner had sourced the disposal themselves, and Bryan handled the swap-out: disconnecting the old unit, mounting the replacement, and getting it back online. While on site, Bryan also rebuilt the Moen faucet using customer-supplied parts, restoring proper function without the cost of a full fixture replacement.

With both items handled in a single visit, the homeowner came away with a working disposal and a faucet that operates the way it should — no drips, no delays, no second trip needed.

Not Sure What You’re Dealing With? That’s a Normal Place to Start

Most plumbing calls don’t start with a burst pipe. They start with something smaller — a drain that used to clear in thirty seconds and now takes two minutes, a damp ring under the cabinet you noticed last week and have been meaning to look at, a toilet that runs for a few seconds after you flush. Or maybe you just moved into an older Frederick home and realized you have no idea what kind of pipes are behind the walls or when the water heater was last touched.

The question at this stage isn’t usually “is this an emergency?” It’s “is this something I should actually call someone about, or am I overthinking it?” Some of it you can leave alone. Some of it will quietly get worse until it isn’t quiet anymore. The hard part is knowing which is which before you’re mopping up water at midnight.

A few things that are usually worth a call sooner than later:

  • A drain that’s slowing down across multiple fixtures — that’s usually further up the line than a simple clog, and professional drain cleaning can clear it before it backs up completely
  • Any visible moisture, staining, or soft drywall near pipes or under sinks — signs that a leak may already be active
  • Water pressure that has dropped noticeably without an obvious reason
  • A water heater that’s more than ten years old and starting to make noise or take longer to recover — worth looking at your water heater options before it fails unexpectedly
  • Pipes in an older home that have never been looked at — Frederick has a lot of housing stock from the mid-1900s and earlier, and what’s behind the walls in those homes varies considerably

None of those are guaranteed emergencies. But they’re the kind of thing that benefits from someone who can take a look and tell you honestly whether you’re fine for now or whether something needs attention.

We broke a water pipe while trying to remove our toilet and BPM rearranged their schedule so that they could come help us fix the pipe and remove the toilet. They were professional and extremely helpful!

We recently purchased a historic 1895 home in downtown Frederick and the giant steam boiler stopped working just a month after moving in. Scrambling to try to figure out what to do, I solicited several quotes, realizing quickly that simply replacing the boiler, may not be the best option for the house. Rich from BMP was excellent from the very first meeting, he was super professional and knowledgeable and gave me various options by thinking “outside the box” of what was possible. The solution he presented was perfect, it eliminated the steam boiler, while providing a dual system that was much more energy efficient, and included no mounted mini-splits on the first floor! This was a critical piece, in keeping the historic look of the home. The company’s installation and communication were also terrific (I’m a realtor and deal with lots of contractors). They were extremely responsive and patient with all of my concerns, and answered all of my questions along the way. They were always on time, cleaned up after themselves, and seemed to truly care about me as a customer. I highly recommend the team from BPM for your HVAC, heating, and plumbing needs. (I also had them service my tankless water heater).

How BPM Handles Plumbing in Frederick

BPM handles the full range of residential plumbing — not just drains and leaks, but water heaters, fixture installation and replacement, bathroom renovations, sump pump services, water filtration and softener systems, frozen and burst pipe repair, pressure regulator valves, and more. If it involves water moving through your house, it’s in scope.

When a technician comes out, the first thing they do is understand what you’re actually dealing with — not just the symptom you called about, but the context around it. If you’ve got a slow drain and they notice something else worth flagging while they’re there, they’ll tell you what they found and what it means before anything else happens. You decide what gets done. Nothing moves forward without your approval.

BPM’s approach is straightforward: tell you what’s actually wrong, give you honest options, and do the work cleanly. If it’s a small fix, they’ll say so. If it’s the start of something bigger, they’ll explain what you’re looking at and why — not to alarm you, but so you can make a real decision. That same directness applies to pricing: you hear the number before the work starts.

For older Frederick homes with aging pipes, outdated fixtures, or systems that haven’t been touched in years, BPM has handled that kind of work regularly. Historic homes in the area present their own set of challenges — access constraints, older materials, systems that weren’t designed with modern expectations in mind — and the team is familiar with what that looks like in practice. If repiping is on the table, they’ll walk you through what that involves and whether it makes sense for your situation.

When permits are required, BPM pulls them and coordinates inspections. When a job turns out to be more straightforward than expected, the invoice reflects that. The goal is to leave you with a clear picture of what was done, why, and what to watch for going forward — not just a fixed pipe and a bill.

5 Stars – Outstanding Service!

I was referred to BPM Heating & Cooling and could not be more impressed! I reached out to both BPM and Ben Lewis at the same time — Ben had a two-week wait, but BPM showed up the same day in the early afternoon. Technician Matt Przywarty was prompt, professional, and clearly very knowledgeable. He quickly diagnosed and repaired a clogged drain and went above and beyond by explaining what caused the issue and how to prevent it in the future. He provided a detailed list of do’s and don’ts, which was incredibly helpful. Matt was polite, thorough, and respectful of our home. I’m extremely pleased with the service and grateful for the quick response. Thank you, BPM and Matt — highly recommend!!

We’ve had good experiences with BPM: 2 bathroom renovations and a battery backup sump pump replacement. Had 1 minor issue on a sink drain installed 1 1/2 years ago and BPM made a warranty repair without charge. Quality plumbers – personally and professionally.

These guys did an amazing job installing a water softener in our basement. Everyone else we’ve talked to basically told that we had to get an entire house water softener, and that it was impossible to leave 1 or 2 lines untreated. Having a couple untreated lines was very important to us because we do not need any more sodium in our diet, and replacing mg/ca with sodium can be lethal for some aquarium fish (you would need an RO filter or something to get rid of sodium)… anyways, it turned out not to be true – BPM was able to separate out our fridge and one sink from getting softened water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of plumbing work does BPM actually handle — is it just drains and leaks, or the whole house?

The full house. BPM handles drain cleaning and drainpipe repair, leak diagnosis and repair, water heater replacement (tank, tankless, and heat pump), fixture installation and replacement, bathroom renovations, sump pump replacement including battery backup systems, water filtration and softener installation, pressure regulator valves, frozen and burst pipe repair, and main water line emergencies. If it involves water moving through your home, it’s in scope.

Is there a charge just to have someone come out and look?

Call BPM at (240) 200-0887 to ask about diagnostic fees for your specific situation — the answer can depend on the type of job. For water heater replacements and certain other installations, instant online pricing is available at bpmhvac.com without needing a visit first. Either way, you hear the number before any work begins.

How quickly can someone get here if this turns into a real problem?

Same-day service is available during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM). For urgent situations, BPM has a track record of dispatching within an hour and rearranging the schedule to accommodate emergencies. BPM does not offer 24/7 after-hours emergency service, so if something goes wrong late at night, shutting off the main water supply is the right first move until the morning.

My house was built in the 1950s — are they comfortable with older pipes and systems?

Yes. BPM works regularly in older Frederick homes, including properties with original galvanized drain lines, cast iron stacks, and plumbing that was last updated decades ago. They’ve also handled historic homes in the downtown area with more complex situations — the kind of work where a less experienced plumber might struggle with access or unfamiliar materials. If you’re not sure what you have, a technician can assess it and tell you what condition it’s actually in.

If the plumber finds something else wrong while they're here, am I automatically on the hook for more work?

No. BPM’s standard practice is to tell you what they found and what it means — then you decide what happens next. Nothing gets added to the scope without your approval. If they spot something worth watching but not urgent, they’ll say so and leave the decision with you.

Can I get a sense of what something will cost before anyone shows up?

For water heater replacements, BPM offers instant online pricing at bpmhvac.com/shop — you can price out a new system without a sales call. For repair and diagnostic work, pricing depends on what’s actually found, so an exact number isn’t available upfront. What BPM does commit to: you hear the price before the work starts, not after. Financing is also available through Nymeo Federal Credit Union for larger jobs.

Do they serve the whole city, or just certain parts of Frederick?

BPM serves all of Frederick, including downtown, the historic districts, and the newer developments on the city’s outskirts. The shop is on East 4th Street, so no part of the city is a stretch. Service also extends throughout Frederick County — Urbana, Middletown, Walkersville, and surrounding areas are all within the regular service footprint.
